Round one of a, sort of, new game! Today we start a new journey on the road to Global dominance. Axis & Allies Global 1942. A tournament style version of Global 40 designed by Larry Harris and, I think, Greg Smorey of GENCON fame. Everyone is at war to start the game thus eliminating the poor sap who gets saddled with the USA and USSR being relegated to barback for 5 hours until he gets to roll dice. Matt and Mugzy are the Axis and Ray and I are the Allies. this is round one people, enjoy!

Episode 78

Round 14 sees the end of our first game of Axis & Allies 1914. Great game, great fun. we all loved the new combat system even if it did leave us with a feeling of coitus interupus by only having one round of dice rolling per battle. Nothing worse than having a handful of dice and not be able to throw them. But it was a very interesting game. After our first attempt we'd all like to try it again, especially Mugzy who can't wait to try the Central Powers. Tune in to find out who threw the towel in.

Sunday 31 March 2013

Battle of the Bulge

Due to a scheduling conflict, Mugzy couldn't make it so Ray and I could have played one of the regular boring old A&A games that we always play but contrary to his feelings along those lines I decided we would play something we've never played before since we rarely have only two of us we went with a two player game: Battle of the Bulge.

This game has an entirely different dynamic that all other A&A games as it's played on a hexagon map and with 12 sided dice. Hit's are 6's or less but you can roll hits that all fall on one unit that could have hit several units. Also it takes 2 hits to kill most units and you can't move unless you bring in supply tokens.

The first game we played, I was the Germans and I feel I did pretty well and would have one if not for an egregious error that resulted in the Allies slipping in behind my lines and taking four points away from me right before I was ready to make the killing stroke, dropping me just under the 24 points required before round 8 ended.

Caesar break!

In game 2 Ray was the Germans and he never pressed forward fast enough. His highest point total was 3 and that's where he finished. He kept having trouble getting his trucks loose from the front lines and this resulted in entire sections of the frontline going without supplies to move a couple times. He threw the towel in in round 7.

Pretty fun game. I hope we got the rules right although the Allies Airforce seemed a little overpowered. We may play it again!

Episode 63 of the podcast will be the first 4 rounds of our second game and it should be up this Friday.

A New Game (Sort of)

As I had prior obligations out of town I did not think I`d be playing this past Sunday and Ray and Mugzy got together to play a game of Classic. It turns out I could make it and showed up just as Germany (Mugzy) was coming into Moscow.

They were playing with a mod that has extra developments and Japan got long range surface ships.

That pretty much spelled the end for the Allies as USA had no troops in Eastern USA and that meant Japan would be placing units in San Francisco next round. We cracked some Lithuanian beers and opened up a game we have only played once each, and not recently.

Axis & Allies Pacific from 2001

This is one from Ray`s collection. As I said we hadn`t played it in some time and because of that we had to spend a good amount of time going over the rules. The two biggest ones being original factories can pump out unlimited units, thus Hawaii`s factory puts USA very much closer to the action than most other games, and Japan`s first round attack being a surprise makes all defending units roll at one rather than their regular defense roll. So fighters defend at 1 Battleships, everything defends at one.

The scoring mechanism in the game is thus: The Allies win if they take Japan, simple. Japan has a few different ways to win. If I recall, and now that I think back I might be remembering wrong, if Japan takes a capital, San Fran, Calcutta or New South Wales, they win. They can also win by getting 22 Victory Points. They accumulate points one for every ten IPC`s they collect.

We`re not sure if we got all they rules right but in the end the USA had a huge fleet off Philippines and Japan was pinned at home. Ray conceded and it being a quick win we decided this game sucks. For myself I`d like to look into mods for this game and to check if the rules were being followed. I like to mix it up and play different games all the time. Ray would rather play Classic every time and might not be convinced to put this one in the rotation. It has some very interesting rules and you can see some of the progression up the line to today`s games.

Tuesday 8 January 2013

2013 Begins

Last Sunday the guys and us got together and played a couple of games. The first was very old and the second was very new.

At the behest of Ray we played a third game in a row of Classic A&A with the card mods with me as the Axis as we had taken turns all the way back to November 25, which you're listening to now if you're following the podcast, Ray was Axis then, then Mugzy and now me. Pics follow but let me tell you, I got hosed not by the dice, but by the cards. Every card I pulled was a keeper I couldn't use or a bonus for the Allies. it ended in round three with my disgraceful surrender.

Below are the hated enemy

Allies whooped all kinds of ass in this one. After my round one attack on Karelia it was all down hill.

Then we played A&A 1942 Second Edition. Knowing this was an Axis slanted game I insisted that we play the same teams. Axis steam rolled and we were all done by 21:30 in the evening. I'd wager none of us could recall the nature of the Axis win but it was an Axis win none the less. the following are the pictures of said game from Twitter, speaking of which if you feel the need to follow us on Twitter the handle is @Dicetruction
